Monroe Science Educational Services - logo

Monroe Science Educational Services (MSES) is a secondary educational, science-based, field study trip and consultation business.  We enjoy serving the community with an emphasis on bringing "real-world" science topics, processes and applications to students and families. We offer a variety of indoor and outdoor programs and student/teacher workshops geared towards National and California State Science Standards.

Professor James R.(Randy) Monroe has spent his science teaching career as a knowledgeable and competent  up-to-date Scientist, embedding and integrating cutting-edge science technologies and techniques in to processes and topics covered through a standardized Earth, Life and Physical Science curriculum.

Monroe has received a Bachelor of Arts from California State University East Bay (CSUEB), a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from CSUEB, a K-8 Science Authorization from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), a Single Subject Earth and Planetary Science at CCTC and a Master's of Science in Technology Leadership under CSUEB's famed Dr. Gillani and Dr. Chen. He is also a board member of the Contra Costa Science and Math Education Association.

Monroe collaborates and is in contact with many of the leading local, state, and national science and science educational institutions and business. This includes a strong Native Fishes Program developed with biologist Chris Miller and the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District and as a member of the New Horizon Education Team, the mission to Pluto. Monroe's step-father James Christy's discovered Pluto's largest moon Charon in 1978, named after Monroe's mother Charlene.

Through his fascination with hydrothermal vent ecology, Monroe became an adjunct faculty at the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute in the Microbial Ecology Program and has also worked through Industrial Initiatives for Science and Math Educators (IISME) at Lockheed Martin as a Systems Engineer in missile defense studying infrared technologies.

The MSES logo depicts Monroe's desire to eventually have intact and healthy ecosystems within California through the return of the gray wolf. The grey wolf and  the grizzly bear are extirpated species that need preservation.

James R. (Randy) MonroeMy name is (James R.) Randy Monroe and I am passionate and enthusiastic about science. Currently employed by the Mt. Diablo Unified School District for over three years, I teach 6th grade Earth Science. The school at which I teach is the Foothill Middle School in Walnut Creek, California. Foothill Middle School is ranked as a California Distinguished school and has won a National Blue Ribbon Award.

I have BA in Liberal Studies, a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a Science Authorization, and a Single Subject Credential in Earth and Planetary Sciences. Currently I am finishing another for Biology, as well as a Master's of Science in Technology Leadership.

For over eight years, I coordinated and directed dozens of standards-based field study trips for middle school science classes including Earth, Life, and Physical Sciences; including my 3 day/2 night trip to the Lassen area. Prior to teaching at Foothill Middle School, I spent 5 years as a Science Teacher and the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Coordinator at Glenbrook Middle, a Title-One school in Concord, California. At Glenbrook, I was awarded “Teacher of the Year” two times. I initiated my teaching career for the Antioch Unified School District as a 4/5 Special Day Class Instructor working with children with a vast array of learning challenges. With Antioch Unified, I worked with children affected by: blindness, severe ADHD, fetal alcohol and/or drug dependency, abuse, hearing impairment, and deafness. I am fluent in American Sign Language and possess the core skills to work with children having special needs.
